In the spring of 2024, Joyce De Coninck visited UC Berkeley, with the financial aid of a seed funding grant.
She comments:
As part of my postdoctoral research at the Ghent European Law Institute and in thanks to the Strategic Partnership between Ghent University and Berkeley University, I reached out to Professor Jeroen Dewulf, an alumnus of Ghent University and the current Director of the Institute of European Studies at Berkeley University.
In alignment with this strategic partnership, I proposed and conducted a workshop on the EU’s Human Rights Responsibility Gap and EU Transnational Cooperative Governance, which is the core of my postdoctoral project. This workshop, co-sponsored by the Miller Institute for Global Challenges and the Law, was held on April 11, 2024..
Following the workshop, I was thrilled to present at the EU Scholars Conference at Berkeley Law on April 12, 2024. Here, I shared my preliminary work on ‘Deliberative Discourse and the EU’s Human Rights Responsibility’ with distinguished scholars such as Professor Dr. Ayelet Shachar, Professor Dr. Katerina Linos, and Professor Dr. Elena Chachko. The closed conference gathered EU law scholars from across the United States and Europe, fostering rich discussions and collaborative insights. It featured a welcome lunch, a tour of the Berkeley campus, a keynote speech by Professor Dr. Joseph Weiler, and a reception at the iconic Berkeley City Club hotel. The conference aimed to facilitate conversations among diverse EU law scholars and explore emerging research avenues.
This experience significantly enriched my research and provided invaluable opportunities for professional growth and transatlantic networking within the academic community."
